OSHA Porta Potty Requirements for Texas Construction Sites

Published July 28, 2026 · Reviewed October 6, 2026 · Paul Rental Works

Porta potties on a construction site

Texas job sites follow federal OSHA rules for toilets and washing facilities. Here is the exact table, what it means for your crew and how we recommend servicing units in North Texas.

What does OSHA require for job-site toilets?

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c) Table D-1 requires 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers; 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers for 20 to 199 workers; and 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers for 200 or more. Toilets must be available unless crews have transportation to nearby facilities.

Does Texas add its own rules?

Texas has no separate state OSHA plan for private employers, so federal OSHA rules apply on private job sites. Cities and general contractors can add their own site rules. Waste from portable toilets must be hauled to permitted facilities under Texas Commission on Environmental Quality rules.

Legal minimum vs. our recommendation

OSHA sets the minimum; usability is a separate question. One unit for 20 workers meets the law but fills fast with weekly service. Paul Rental Works recommends 1 unit per 10 workers on weekly service, or twice-weekly service for bigger crews.

CrewOSHA minimumOur recommendation
811 unit, weekly
1512 units, weekly
351 seat + 1 urinal4 units + 1 hand-wash station
602 seats + 2 urinals6 units + 2 stations, or twice-weekly

When do I need hand-washing stations?

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities where workers apply paints, coatings, herbicides or other contaminants. Many GCs require a station on every site. Place stations next to toilets and refill them on each service visit.
